34-year old Mike from Portsmouth (pictured second from right), started out as an apprentice with Liberty in 2002 and is now an experienced domestic and commercial gas engineer.

The former apprentice has seen his career go from strength to strength with the firm over the past fifteen years.

Mike now uses his expertise to support new apprentices that come on board, helping them to gain hands-on experience in the trade.

He said: “I got into gas engineering through a family friend, he put me on to it and got me work experience with a couple of one-man bands.

“My apprenticeship really set up my career, I’ve worked with some good people and had some great training. It’s great to now be helping young apprentices starting out in gas engineering by showing them the ropes.”

Commenting on his work at the moment on the Portsmouth City Council contract, Mike said:

“It’s a very busy job and I work on domestic and commercial gas for Portsmouth City Council as well as other jobs if needed. Commercial jobs are bigger, and there’s even more responsibility there because it has to be repaired the same day – for example at a sheltered housing scheme.

“Another big one we’ve been working on is Leamington House tower block where a team of twelve of us fixing the heating in there.

“The council is good at making sure the boiler systems are up to date, so we’ve been doing a lot of boiler refurbishment work for them too.”

Mike concluded: “I really enjoy my job - if I wasn’t doing this I don’t know what I’d be doing. One of the great things about it is how every day is different.

“I’d recommend an apprenticeship with Liberty to anyone looking for a great start to their career. As long as they are willing to work hard and learn then they can do well for themselves.”
