Twenty-three-year-old Paul Bamford, from Childwall in Liverpool, began his apprenticeship with Liberty Group 18 months ago.
He’d tried a number of jobs after leaving school, from acting to working in bars and shops, before he decided that he wanted to work towards a trade.
After working as a labourer for a family friend for a few years alongside a gas engineer, Paul knew that he wanted to move into this area and applied for an apprenticeship role with Liberty.
He started out working with the services and breakdown team before moving on to gas installation.
As Paul works towards his ACS qualification, which is nearing completion and has seen him develop the required portfolio of 50 jobs, he is now being given more freedom to work independently as his experience develops.
He believes apprenticeships are the future for young people in his position that want to develop a trade.
Paul said: “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I left school, but once I realised that I wanted to develop a trade, an apprenticeship was the best way forward for me. I get to learn on the job with a great team, and work towards a qualification.
“Apprenticeships have huge benefits for any company as it means they are training people in-house and can set their own standards around how they want things done.
“It’s great that Liberty are investing in apprenticeships and giving more people like me the opportunity to develop their careers.”
When Paul completes his ACS qualification he’ll be registered Gas Safe and will continue working as an installer for Liberty.
