“Joining Liberty Group was a big milestone for me. I considered it to be my first ‘proper’ job out of college,” said Nichia, who is now 25.
“My first role was in customer service and after developing my skills and experience for five years at Liberty I decided to try working in a completely different sector. I joined the NHS as a receptionist where I further developed my communication and organisational skills.
“It was a real boost to be contacted last year by my previous manager at Liberty and encouraged to apply for the job of Commercial Contract Administrator. It’s always a big decision to put yourself forward for a new role but I was delighted when I was successful in securing the job. I knew it would be a great opportunity to learn and progress in my career. I’m so glad I put myself forward as I’m really enjoying my time at Liberty.
“My role involves raising quotes for commercial work and managing the diaries of our commercial operatives. It’s a behind the scenes role that’s vital to ensuring our service runs smoothly, work is properly planned in and our resources are being used effectively.
“It’s a varied role and can be challenging at times, especially if there are peaks in demand for our gas engineers. Winter for instance, can be a very busy time. It’s really important we can get our team out to people’s homes during snow and cold weather as quickly as possible. I’ll often need to rearrange diaries at short notice and ensure our team and clients know what to expect.
Nichia has always been keen to learn and develop was proud to have completed an NVQ L3 in customer service in 2015. She is now thinking about her future career path and what additional training she can do.
Nichia added: “I’m actually thinking of learning a new trade and starting an apprenticeship as a gas engineer. I’ve been inspired by my Liberty colleague Jenny Hughes and would love to try something new, perhaps a more physical role. Plus, I’d love to see more women doing roles which are traditionally dominated by men!
“I’ve seen how successful Jenny has been at Liberty and how much she enjoys her apprenticeship, so who knows? Maybe that will be the big step I take in 2019. I believe it’s never too late to change direction and try new things. I’d always encourage people to keep an open mind about these things and follow your heart.”
