Liberty is committed to investing in its staff and their futures and is set to launch a new Training and Apprenticeship Academy at the end of February to enhance the skills of staff further.

The academy will launch with the introduction of a nationally Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) centre to train and accredit Liberty’s gas engineers. Over the next 18 months, the Academy will grow - incorporating apprenticeships and NVQs for staff.

Shay’s story

Shay Griffiths is urging people to consider a career with Liberty after being given the chance to train as an apprentice plumber.

The 18-year-old, who grew up in Wrexham and went to school at Ysgol Morgan Llwyd, landed the role with Liberty three months ago after fearing his chances of completing his apprenticeship had been snatched away from him.

Shay had started his career as an apprentice plumber with another firm a year ago but was let go when work dried up.

After hearing about Liberty’s apprenticeship scheme, he applied to take part and says he has never looked back.

Shay, who is now studying for an NVQ Level 3 in Plumbing said: “It feels like a place where I can build a career. There’s a really good team here and I really feel like I’m part of it.”

Shay is mentored by an experienced member of staff, Paul Sprott.

Commenting on his support, he said: “The training I get is great and I have a mentor, Paul, that I work with. He’s been really helpful and gives me loads of advice.”

“If I hadn’t got my apprenticeship with Liberty I’m not sure what I’d be doing. I’d have tried to stay on at college, but this gives me the chance to learn on the job and earn some money.”

“I’d recommend an apprenticeship to anyone. It’s a massive opportunity, so I’d tell anyone to take the chance if they are offered one.”
